Simulation
Monash Health has a wide variety of simulation education opportunities, ranging from regular interdisciplinary SIM at MMC ED, in situ SIM through Paeds ED, skills days, and the Monash Simulation Centre at Moorabbin.

Paediatric ED runs its own in situ simulation program, embedded in the department's everyday teaching. One of the Paediatric ED fellow portfolios is "SIM Fellow" - alongside Dr Adnan Bilgrami, a great first point of contact for paeds-specific simulation questions.
Simulation Opportunities by Site
Casey Hospital
- Weekly to fortnightly inter-professional in situ sims, 2-3pm, with a mix of paediatric and adult cases.
- 3 registrars and 3-4 nurses per SIM. Registrars on a PM shift that day are allocated at the start of term and can swap with others if needed. HMOs are invited to attend.
Contacts: Dr Jason Kwok, Dr Steph Reilly
Dandenong Hospital
- Ad hoc in situ sims - registrars are encouraged to attend when workload permits.
Contacts: Dr Priya Jeyaveerasingam, Dr Kenny Hii
MMC Adults
- Monthly Wednesday afternoon sessions in place of usual registrar teaching, 12-2pm. Inter-professional with nurses. Two scenarios with dedicated debrief.
- Registrars are allocated each term.
Contacts: Dr Steph Reilly, Dr Anastasia Sfakiotaki (currently on leave)
MMC Paeds
- Weekly in situ sims, usually during clinical time - "surprise" sims when the buzzer is pressed. Topics are always a basic, quintessential PEM topic.
- Weeks 4 and 7 of each term are onsite during registrar teaching - longer cases with robust discussion and debrief afterwards.
- ReCAP courses run twice a year, first in best served, and are also inter-professional. Registrars are encouraged to approach Dr Preeti Ramaswamy to sign up.
Contacts: Dr Adnan Bilgrami, Dr Preeti Ramaswamy, and the SIM Fellow
Victorian Heart Hospital
- Fortnightly simulations for registrars, +/- HMOs and nurses - arranged ad hoc while on rotation.
- Additional exposure to ECPR sims with ICU, and paediatric simulations with outpatients.
Contacts: Dr Drew Brownlee, Dr Ophelia Wong
Monash Simulation Centre
Monash Simulation Centre at Moorabbin runs a number of useful courses for trainees, including:
ACE - Acute Cardiovascular Emergencies
Simulation-based course on assessing and managing acute cardiac conditions - vascular access, CPR/defibrillation, ACLS and external pacing, with a strong focus on leadership, teamwork and communication under pressure.
ACME - Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies
Challenging simulation scenarios for experienced practitioners - aimed at senior EM physicians, senior registrars and senior CMOs.
Clinical Event Debriefing Course
A one-day simulation course training critical care doctors and nurses to debrief well after critical incidents, such as a cardiac arrest.
TRAC - Team Response to Airway Crises
A simulation-based course for critical care specialties, teaching a shared template for managing the unanticipated difficult airway - both surgical and non-surgical approaches.
Toxicology Course
A two-day course on the issues and complexities involved in managing an acutely poisoned or envenomed patient.
MMC interdisciplinary SIM
In situ, inter-professional simulation at Monash Medical Centre, three times a term - nursing, medical and allied health staff training together as they'd actually work.
Upcoming sessions - Term 3
11:45am - 2pm. In situ at Monash Medical Centre.
