Teaching
Structured teaching, built around you - from JR to fellowship.
Teaching streams
Teaching runs Wednesdays, with several streams in parallel so registrars at different stages get sessions pitched to them.
Weekly timetable
This week's and next week's sessions are on the home page, or browse the full year by term and stream below.
Core EM
Interactive tutorials for registrars not currently in exam preparation, covering the ACEM syllabus core topics on a two-year rotation. Pre-reading is provided ahead of most sessions.
Primary
For trainees preparing for the primary exam. HMOs and registrars considering it are welcome to join. →
Fellowship Knowledge Course
Known as FEK. A 12-month course building the underlying knowledge needed before starting the Fellowship Written course. →
UpdatED
A general combined session for registrars at every level - specialty insights, useful network updates and interesting case discussions.
Fellowship Written
A six-month course focused purely on exam technique, for trainees sitting the written exam within six months. →
Fellowship OSCE
A 12-16 week course of small-group teaching, with a mentor and exam coach allocated to each trainee. →
Paediatrics
A 13-week program for FACEM and FRACP trainees on a paediatric ED term, running Wednesdays 10am-2pm - online teaching, skills and simulation, and shared sessions with PICU and the PEM Collaborative. →
Attendance
As per your EBA, all registrars and fellows are paid 5 hours per week to participate in teaching, and we expect an attendance rate of over 80% pro rata. The 80% calculation does not include when you cannot attend due to nights, annual leave, personal leave or alternative education arrangements:
- You are not expected to attend if you are rostered on nights on the Wednesday, just post nights, on annual leave or rostered to an AM shift on the floor.
- If you are away on personal/carers leave, please email the teaching consultants to advise them of this.
- Some trainees may opt to attend alternate teaching, such as Fellowship stream or if attending a course/conference - please discuss this with your DEMT and the teaching team so we can mark your attendance accordingly.
Less than 80% attendance will be reviewed and reflected in your end of term assessment, specifically in regards to your professionalism.
Recorded lectures and internal material
Session recordings, rosters and departmental documents live in the "Monash Emergency Registrar Education Hub" Teams channel, kept within Monash IT infrastructure for privacy. You'll need a Monash Health account and to be added to the channel - this link won't open for external visitors. If you can't access it, email Patrick Finn to be added.
Simulation
Monash Health runs a wide range of simulation opportunities - courses at the Monash Simulation Centre in Moorabbin, and regular departmental programs like MMC ED interdisciplinary SIM and in situ Paeds ED simulation. Trainees are encouraged to attend at least one a year.
